The composition is based on a powerful perspective of the canal, along which an elegant gondola with richly decorated red and gold seats floats, framed by the vertical lines of tenement houses and a bridge in the background. The saturated turquoise-blue water contrasts with the warm tones of the brick and beige facades, and accents of deep black and intense red in the boat's interior.
